Hrafna – Flóki Whiskey Infused is a rich and layered triple with a base of light maltiness, notes of grain, and a subtle sweetness. The beer has fruity aromas and flavors of banana, spiciness from coriander seeds, and citrus aromas and flavors from the addition of orange peel. Two types of whiskey are also added to the brew: Flóki Single Malt and, hold on to your hats, Flóki Sheep Dung Smoked Reserve. The single malt primarily adds notes of oak and vanilla to the beer, while the Sheep Dung Smoked adds a subtle smokiness and earthy notes.
In Iceland, it is a tradition to use sheep dung when smoking food. Flóki now also applies this process to the drying of the malt. The whiskey in the making matures for twelve months in new American oak barrels, which are left to mature at the foot of Hekla (a volcano). These Flóki Whiskeys come from Eimverk Distillery, a family-run distillery founded in 2009 with the mission of producing premium Icelandic spirits exclusively from local ingredients.
Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson was a Norse explorer who lived in the 9th century and is credited with being the first Norseman to consciously sail to Iceland to settle there.
