Goðafoss is a robust quadrupel with the addition of juniper berries, the only coniferous tree that grows wild in Iceland. Expect a sturdy, dark amber-colored beer with a full body, a creamy texture, and a ruby red glow. This quadrupel is sweet and malty, with notes of caramel, toffee, dark sugars, and fruity esters of ripe fruit such as plums and bananas. There are also spicy hints of cloves and malty notes of biscuit and bread. The addition of juniper berries gives a slightly spicy, woody aroma. The finish is long-lasting sweet with a slightly bitter aftertaste.
This beer is named after the Goðafoss waterfall, a majestic waterfall in North Iceland that is also known as the "Waterfall of the Gods." The name is derived from a historical moment around the year 1000, when Þorgeirr Ljósvetningagoði, the then-lawspeaker, threw pagan idols into the waterfall during Iceland's conversion to Christianity.
